RESPONSIBLE TOURISM > Oman's Responsible Tourism |
|
In
cooperation with World Tourism Organisation (WTO) and UNESCO, the
Ministry of Tourism organised the conference of Built Environments
for Sustainable Tourism (BEST)
Muscat Declaration in February
2005.
During 2009 the Ministry of Tourism prepared the Development Control
Plan Framework for tourism development which will be published in
April 2010. This document provides planning and design standards and
detailed social and environmental guidelines on tourism development
with guidance and safeguards for special areas. The framework also
promotes social responsibility and community engagement, linking
development to the cultures and aspirations of local communities in
Oman.
Omran, the Government of Oman’s tourism development and investment
company, established in 2005 recognises that Oman enjoys a strong
cultural heritage, hospitable and friendly people, traditional
Arabic architecture and breathtaking and diverse natural scenery.
Omran’s approach to these developments is socially responsible,
ensuring that the Omani people will be the first to benefit from the
sustainable tourism we envision, whilst preserving the environment
and the national natural sanctuaries. Creating job opportunities for
Omanis is a driving force behind the government’s efforts to
diversify the economy away from oil – a goal shared by Omran. Omran
has developed a Responsible Tourism policy and implementation
strategy.
The Ministry of Tourism is developing a national policy on
Responsible Tourism for Oman and engaging with national and local
government, hotels, tour operators and to ensure that Oman maintains
its heritage and creates forms of tourism which are not only
sustainable but which also provides opportunities to strengthen its
natural and cultural heritage.
